Franz Schubert - String Quintet (arranged by ZRI)

ZRI (Zum Roten Igel - The Red Hedgehog) is an eclectic group of superb musicians named after a famous 19th century Viennese tavern and concert venue, where gypsy and other folk musicians played and composers from Schubert to Brahms drank in their music as well as the beer late into the night.

ZRI’s exciting version of Schubert’s much-loved String Quintet brings out his fluid embrace of folk tradition in it. Interspersing the quintet movements with European traditional music from Hungarian pub tunes and Jewish klezmer to an improvised wedding lament they take us through the looking glass to present the full glory of Schubert’s radicalism and originality.

"A wonderfully unlikely but intoxicating mix…the players really bring out the beauties of Schubert’s music in its new guise. But it is also great fun".
